New York City is a wonderful place to both live and to visit. New York City's five boroughs span 301 square miles. That's big. According to the New York City Department of City Planning, New York City is home to 8,213,839 people. According to Mayor Bloomberg's office, an additional 44 million people visited New York City in 2006. That's a lot of people going to and fro.
What New York City's 8 million people know, and the tourists quickly find out, is that despite its vast size, New York is a walking city. And even though most people are pedestrians, many still take to the street in vehicles. The mixture of pedestrians and motorists on busy New York city street unfortunately lead to many accidents.
According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, in 2005 alone, there were 71,167 motor vehicle accidents in New York City. Of these, 10,880 motor vehicle accidents involved pedestrians. Unfortunately these accidents resulted in 328 deaths including 159 pedestrian deaths. In 2006, there was 315 total fatalities, with pedestrians making up the lion's share at 162 fatalities. This means that in 2006 pedestrians made up 51.5 percent of the motor vehicle related fatalities in New York City.
